Following a temporary production pause while Matt Reeves stepped away to attend to a family matter, Robert Pattinson says he is so happy Steven Soderbergh stepped in to finish principal photography.
The Batman Part II was recently paused because Matt Reeves needed to step away to attend to a family matter. First and foremost, I really hope that he, his family, and his loved ones are okay and that they can get through whatever they’re dealing with right now.
While it’s unfortunate that filming had to pause in early October, production is already back underway, and we just got some reassuring news from Robert Pattinson. In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Pattinson shared that he starts filming in a couple of days and said, “I am so happy he’s come on to help Matt,” calling Soderbergh’s decision to step in and finalize filming on The Batman Part II incredibly generous and completely selfless.
That’s a relief to hear, because this is a much less contentious situation than when Joss Whedon took over Warner Bros.’s Justice League for Zack Snyder. When a major movie has another director step in mid-stream, especially under unfortunate personal circumstances, it’s critical to have positive relationships with the production crew and actors. You want the person helping out on set to genuinely respect the original creative team and their vision.
Why Steven Soderbergh Fits Matt Reeves’s Gotham
Something in me feels like when I think of Steven Soderbergh’s movies, he’s someone who can perfectly fill the shoes of Matt Reeves while he’s away. He’s made some incredible movies over the years, with films like Contagion, Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich, Logan Lucky, and Side Effects. The most recent film I remember watching of his is Black Bag, and while it isn’t a movie that I particularly liked, it still has a tone that I feel lines up well here.
The movie of his that I enjoyed the most is Contagion. That film alone has this moody paranoia to it, and the tone feels so close to what Matt Reeves does that all I can really say is I trust him. Because of that, this project is in trusted hands for me.
More importantly, Reeves himself made it crystal clear that this isn’t a permanent handover. In a post on Twitter, Reeves stated, “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II,” while thanking Soderbergh for helping him finish principal photography.
Soderbergh actually approached Reeves himself to help complete the final weeks of filming with the full support of DC Studios, and he explained that his plan is practical more than creative: to shoot the movie the way Reeves would want it and line up with Reeves’s vision as closely as possible. Soderbergh is only stepping in to finish filming, and Reeves will return to oversee post-production when he’s able. After all of the recent false starts with The Batman Part II, this update finally makes me feel confident that it’s actually going to release.
Hoping the Elseworlds Crime Saga Continues
I really love this universe, so I genuinely hope Soderbergh does this justice. Between The Batman and The Penguin, that package of storytelling is just incredible. I really hope that whatever happens with Matt Reeves’s Elseworlds saga, it’s allowed to continue. No third film has been announced, but regardless, I just hope that this movie gets made and that it’s done well.
So, what do you think of this news? Are you excited for this? Do you feel like it’s still going to hold the same tone and vision that Matt Reeves built, or do you wish they had waited for him to come back? I, for one, am glad that they resumed principal photography and that Reeves will be back in the edit bay.
Overall, I’m excited to see The Batman Part II when it releases in theaters on February 18, 2028. Wow, that’s a long ways away, but let me know what you think down in the comments!
